Chocolate - really good chocolate - is also an art form, and at Compartes Chocolatier, Jonathan Grahm has taken a family business to new heights with something I like to call haute chocolate. Using natural ingredients and organic products wherever possible and crafting his delights on-site, Grahm is determined to put Los Angeles on the truffle map.
And having satisfied the sweet tooth of such celebrities as Nicole Kidman, Marcia Cross, Mandy Moore and Jennifer Garner, he's well on his way. Grahm, who wants his offerings to reflect the style trends at play in our city, constantly changes the look and taste of the confections he stocks.
Sure, favorites like English toffee, chocolate-dipped marshmallows, and signature truffles (cup of coffee, smoked sea salt, and peach-rosemary) are always in stock, but seasonal flavors like toasted chestnuts, caramelized apples and brown sugar, and Vermont maple syrup with walnuts enhance the selection.
Also known for quirky sorbets (think orange-basil), artisanal chocolate bars, and original stuffed fruits made entirely with locally grown produce, Comparte's is a nearly unparalleled source of gift possibilities. I know I plan on sitting in the shop's new patio lounge, sipping a cup of tea, and putting my list together.
